Arkansas’ Rock Stars of Rice

It's been a whirlwind period here at the farm between planting and trips to visit our partners in Japan.

Recently, our family farm, H&J Land Co, received a special feature in Arkansas Money and Politics, highlighting not just our work but also the essence of who we are. It’s quite a story, being portrayed as a linchpin in the U.S. rice industry—a responsibility we hold with both pride and humility.

For many decades, my family and I have cultivated rice over thousands of acres in southern Jackson County. This land is more than just soil to us; it’s a legacy of dedication and a testament to the sweat and perseverance that define every farmer’s day. Being featured in such a prominent publication is not only an honor but a moment for us to pause and appreciate the journey.

Our farm is a family-run business where passion is the most crucial crop we cultivate. Each of us plays a pivotal role, from managing the fields to the nuances of the business side like market forecasts and developing our yearly operating budget. My recent focus on the business aspects—like preparing taxes and checking fertilizer prices—ensures our farm not only survives but thrives.

However, it’s not just about the day-to-day management. I have a burning passion for advocating and influencing agricultural policy. Serving on the Arkansas Rice Federation and the Riceland Foods Inc. boards is part of how I contribute beyond our farm’s boundaries. It’s vital for me to use these platforms to promote and support women in agriculture, ensuring our voices are heard and our contributions recognized.

At national rice meetings, when we mention we’re from Arkansas, there’s a spark of recognition. “You’re from Arkansas? Wow, you guys are a big deal!” And yes, we are. Arkansas is a powerhouse in rice production, something we’re incredibly proud of in this state. This recognition isn’t just for our farm; it’s for all Arkansas farmers who contribute tirelessly to feeding the nation and beyond.

I type all of this say: thank you for being part of our journey. Your support and interest in our farm life fuels my commitment to keep you informed and involved. Here’s to more adventures in agriculture together!

Until next time, keep your boots muddy and your hearts hopeful.
